Le Thiet Cuong

Cuong is one of the most admired Vietnamese artists. For him, the reflection of an artist is not very different from the approach of a Buddhist monk, and his work leads to a colourful and hopeful minimalism that invites to meditation.

Le Thiet Cuong was born in 1962 in Hanoi in a family of artists. His father, Nguyen, is a known writer and poet. His mother, Do Phuong Tao, a recognized filmmaker. Cuong is from a generation of Vietnamese people who witnessed the many changes in their country during the last forty years. From 1964 to 1973, Cuong and his family lived in the village of Binh Da in the Vietnamese countryside. This period of his childhood is reflected in his work through scenes of daily life in the Vietnamese countryside. After returning to Hanoi, Cuong studied from 1985 to 1990 the staging and the art of animation at the National Film College. He then developed a passion for teaching the Tay Tang doctrine, a Vietnamese version of the philosophy Tibetan Dzogchen. Education and Buddhist philosophy permeates these creations. Cuong wants to inspire us to live a simple and carefree life, in line with the I Ching, The Book of Changes.

Cuong’s work reveals the impermanence of all things. His message is hopeful and encourages meditation. It highlights the values of simplicity and compassion, as protection against the risk of everyday life and suffering. Cuong met with resounding success in his first solo exhibition abroad (in 1995, the quiet road, Singapore and Hong Kong). He has since exhibited in many cities in Europe and the United States and is considered as one of the major creative forces in Vietnam.
